Hiking Australia’s Fraser Island

Fraser Island Australia

Australia’s Fraser Island is a 120km-long sandbar that is barely 20km at its widest point. (Visionandimagination.com)

Named K’Gari (paradise) by the region’s Aborigines, Australia’s Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island is a unique and untamed paradise of tropical rainforests, giant sand dunes and crystal blue lakes.

The Fraser Island Great Walk, which undulates through the island’s interior for 90km, is an excellent way to see many of the island’s best features. The inland vegetation varies from wild heath to wetlands to dense tropical rainforest (it is the only island in the world where rainforest grows on sand); giant sandblows (dunes more than 200m high) form sandy scars that can be seen for kilometres; and at night the Milky Way blazes across the surface of crystalline creeks and freshwater lakes.

Perched lakes
Over hundreds of years, sand drifting off the east coast of mainland Australia formed Fraser Island, a 120km-long largely uninhabited sandbar that is barely 20km at its widest point. The Great Walk starts from Dilli Village in the island’s southeast and passes through open forests and scribbly gum woodlands, full of eucalyptus trees covered in iconic scribbles drawn by burrowing moth larvae. After 2km, take a detour off the track to scramble up the Wongi sandblow for spectacular coastal views.

The trail continues for another 4.2 km to Lake Boomanjin, the world’s largest perched lake (lakes that sit above the level of groundwater and are mostly fed by rainwater), where tannins from the bark of lakeside eucalyptus trees stain the waters reddish-brown. The vegetation changes soon after leaving Boomanjin, with kauri pines, vines and staghorns forming a primeval world after the open woodlands.

Of Fraser Island’s 40 perched lakes, six lie on or close to the Great Walk. The next one you reach, Lake Benaroon, 3.5km from Lake Boomanjin, has delicately-coloured tea-stained water. From here, the next 7.5km begins with a scenic walk along the shore and through low scrub to the soft white sands and blue waters of Lake Birrabeen. Leaving the lake, the trail follows an old logging road through satinay forests (Fraser Island turpentines) and brush box to Central Station, a former forestry camp and now Fraser’s main campground.

Fraser Island’s natural beauty has not always been valued, and a historical cottage near Central Station details the island’s chequered history. A thriving logging industry began in the late 1800s, felling tall kauri pines and satinay trees. The hardwood timber of the satinays was prized by shipbuilders as it is resistant to shipworm, and axe scars are still evident on many of the tall forest trees. Exploitation of the island’s natural resources continued when sand mining began in 1950 to source the island’s rich deposit of minerals such as zircon and monazite. But environmental lobbies brought both industries to an end – sand mining in 1977 and logging in 1991.

A boardwalk along nearby Wanggoolba Creek dives into dense rainforest. The crystalline waters are so clear the sandy creek floor is a pale ribbon, winding around moss-covered rocks, king ferns and piccabeen palms. With a green canopy overhead, hanging vines, tropical foliage and the calls and whistles of unseen forest creatures, it is a world echoing a prehistoric time.

From Central Station there are two ways to reach Lake McKenzie, one of Fraser’s prime sights. Either turn west for a 6.6km hike via Basin Lake, a popular turtle haunt, or turn east for an 11.3km walk to Pile Valley and its impressive stand of satinay trees. Both trails eventually reach Lake McKenzie’s sugar-white sands. The water is a stunning vivid blue, and the pure-silica sand is soft underfoot. The sand is so fine it is ideal for skin exfoliation. The slightly acid water, from decaying plants, limits the viability of aquatic life but in no way affects the pleasure of a well-earned swim.

Odessa has always been a city of arrivals and departures. Yet despite its painful past – and some say because of it – this Black Sea port has a rich sense of humour.

Secret New York oddities

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

TM Rives, author of Secret New York: An Unusual Guide, sees the magic in the mundane. From a butcher shop that was once a gangster hideaway to subway stations that are now abandoned, his book details curious sites throughout the city, many of which are accessible to travellers.

The ghostly Freedom Tunnel, a subterranean train tunnel that stretches 50 blocks south from 122nd Street on the Upper West Side, was abandoned soon after its construction in the 1930s and became a shantytown for hundreds of New York City’s homeless. A reopening of the tracks in the 1990s, however, mandated a mass eviction, and today the dungeon-like asylum is illegal to enter since the train tracks are active, frequented only by graffiti artists and the occasional urban explorer. Switzerland, Aletsch Glacier, Hiking

Known as a summer and winter sports paradise of pines, peaks and glimmering lakes, Switzerland offers many more ways for visitors to pit themselves against its remarkable landscape than on a ski piste.

Centre
Lake Lucerne twists and turns around steep mountainsides, and in its eastern reaches, the föhn (dry downslope winds) create the perfect conditions for sailing. Adventure Point arranges guided canoe and kayak tours of the lake and, for thrill-seeking sorts, canyoning excursions can also be booked (canoe tours £50, canyoning from £80).

While the revolving mountaintop restaurant from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is Murren’s best-known attraction, its via ferrata offers real-life action. A mile and a half of cables, bridges and ladders leads along the cliff edge that overlooks the astounding Lauterbrunnen valley. Although it’s free to use, first-timers using a via ferrata should rent equipment locally and go with a guide (guided via ferrata £65; mid-Jun–Oct).

Venture to the bowels of the Earth at these eerie 938-metredeep caves in the Muotatal district. At 118 miles in length the Holloch Caves are the second-longest caves in Europe. You’ll need a guide, sturdy footwear and warm clothing to explore here. Trekking Team arranges everything from short tours to day expeditions deep into the mountain, and overnight bivouac tours offer a surreal experience, including a fondue feast in the inky darkness (tours from £60).

Southwest
The tiny village of St-Léonard, a few miles northeast of Sion, hides Europe’s biggest underground lake, discovered in 1943. It’s around 300 metres long and 20 metres wide, and remains at a constant 11C. To see its clear emerald waters shimmer, take a 30-minute guided boat tour (mid-Mar–Oct; tours £6.60).

The Saas Fee Resort is located in a magnificent amphitheatre of 4,000-metre peaks. Take the year-round Allalin funicular up to 3,500m for a glacial panorama, or in summer, whisk yourself up to the sunny slopes of Hannig via cableway before flying back down a three-and-a-half-mile dirt track on a sturdy mountain scooter. Scooter and helmet hire is available from the station at the top of Hannig (day scooter/helmet hire £19).

At 14 miles, the Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps. Cable cars from the resorts of Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp offer easy viewing, but to get really close, put on some crampons and take a guided glacier walk (aletscharena.ch; tours around £35). If you’ve got the guts and a head for heights, trek to the foot of the glacier, to walk across the 124m-long Aletschji- Grünsee suspension bridge.

Southeast
This moderate circular hike takes you in four or five hours from the Oberalp Pass to the dazzling blue-green lake of Lai da Tuma (Tomasee in German) – the source of the Rhine. From the pass, head south and west uphill to the top of Pazolastock. The trail continues along the ridge line and down to the lake before returning north.

The area around the resort of St Moritz makes for exhilarating biking, it being crisscrossed with 200 miles or so of trails. One of the best is the five-hour Suvretta Loop starting at the summit of Corviglia, taking in forests and meadows en route to the 2,615-metre Suvretta Pass before a spectacular descent to the town of Bever. Engadin Bikes offers rentals (day hire from £20).

Created in 1914, the Swiss National Park is a nature-gone-wild swathe of larch woodlands, waterfalls and high moors. You can head out on your own, but you might get more out of a guided hike with the National Park Centre. These include wildlife treks to the Val Trupchun, where you could see ibex, chamois and golden eagles (tours from £18).

Where to stay
At Ranch des Maragnènes, a family-run farm, guests can snooze in sleeping bags in a straw-filled barn, eat country breakfasts of bacon and eggs, and canter off into the countryside on horseback (near Sion; barn spaces £20).

Gasthaus Bargis is a snug, timber-fronted b&b, with unfussy rooms, wrought-iron beds and terraces for some, affording incredible views of the green hills and peaks nearby (Kantonsstrasse 8, Klosters Dorf; from £125).

The Hotel in Lucerne is all streamlined chic, with refined suites featuring stills from movie classics on the ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows with city views (Sempacherstrasse 14, Lucerne; from £285).

Transport
The main airports are in Zürich and Geneva, and airlines flying from the UK include BA, easyJet, Helvetic Airways, Jet2.com and Swiss. Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Heathrow, London City and Manchester all have direct flights to Zürich (from £115), while Geneva can be reached from these airports and also from Bournemouth, Glasgow, Leeds-Bradford, Liverpool, Newcastle, Stansted and Southend (from £80). Switzerland has fast motorways, and an efficient rail system.
